How to Calculate a Dropped Lowest Quiz Grade

A clear method for estimating a course grade when the syllabus drops the lowest quiz or assignment score.

A dropped score changes the category average, but it does not always change the course total by the same amount. The category weight and the number of scores both matter.

Use the published rule and keep the original score visible so you can explain the result if the gradebook applies a different timing or eligibility condition.

   Confirm eligibility

   Check whether the drop is automatic, limited to a number of quizzes, or conditional on completing all required work.

   Recalculate the category

   Remove the eligible lowest score from the numerator and denominator, then divide the remaining points or percentages according to the course method.

   Apply the weight

   Multiply the revised category average by its course weight. Compare it with the category contribution before the drop.

   Match the gradebook

   If the published total differs from the calculator, check for points-based grading, rounding, or another dropped item before drawing conclusions.
