Course Grade vs. GPA: What Is the Difference?

See how a course percentage or letter grade relates to GPA without confusing course math with institution-specific rules.

Course grade calculations and GPA calculations answer different questions. The first uses the grading scheme for one class; the second uses an institution’s rules across a set of classes.

Avoid converting a percentage to GPA using a generic chart when the school has its own scale, plus/minus rules, or repeat policy.

نهج عملي خطوة بخطوة

  1. 01

    Finish the course math first

Use the syllabus to estimate the final percentage or letter grade for the individual course.

  2. 02

    Find the official scale

Check the registrar or academic catalog for grade-point values, plus/minus treatment, credit weighting, and repeated-course rules.

  3. 03

    Weight by credits

When a GPA is credit-weighted, a four-credit course contributes more than a one-credit course. Follow the school’s published formula.

  4. 04

    Separate planning from advising

Use the estimate to understand scenarios, but ask an advisor about probation, honors, transfer, or graduation requirements.

Sources and review basis

Your syllabus, instructor updates, and current course policy remain the controlling sources for academic dates and rules. Product statements were checked against the current App Store listing and Google Play listing. Sources last reviewed 2026-09-01.
