What Grade Do I Need on My Final?

Understand the weighted-grade math and turn the answer into a practical final-exam study target.

The final-grade question is easiest when every category is expressed as weighted course points. A current average alone can be misleading if some categories are incomplete or weighted differently.

Use the official syllabus weights and include only grades that actually count. Then treat the result as a planning input, not a prediction.

A practical step-by-step approach

  1. 01

Convert completed work to weighted points

Multiply each category average by its course weight. Add the results to find the points already secured.

  2. 02

    Find the remaining target points

Subtract those secured points from your desired final course grade.

  3. 03

    Divide by the final weight

If you need 18 course points and the final is worth 25%, you need 18 ÷ 0.25, or 72%, on the exam.

  4. 04

Check whether the result is realistic

A result above 100% means the target is not reachable through the final alone. Review extra credit, replacement rules, and lower target scenarios.
